Acclaimed Author Francesca Melandri visits Chicago

Layout 1

Award-winning author and screenwriter Francesca Melandri will be in Chicago on Monday, October 24, and Tuesday, October 25, for two special events as she presents the new English translation of her latest book, Eva Sleeps [Eva Dorme], which was recently named Italian Elle magazine’s Book of the year.

About the book:

A bestselling novel in Italy, soon to be a motion picture directed by Edoardo Winspeare, Eva Sleeps is a sweeping modern story about family, forgiveness, and conflict. At its heart is the story of a woman searching for the truth about her origins.

Out of the struggles and conflicts in the border regions of Northern Italy and Austria and the rich history that has resulted from this meeting of cultures, comes a family story that embodies the history of nations. Eva, a forty-year-old public relations professional living in Northern Italy, receives an unexpected message from southern Italy. Vito, a man she briefly knew as a child as a friend of her mother’s, is very ill and would like to see her one last time. He is a retired police officer who was stationed in the north during the late sixties, a period rife with tension, protest, and violence. These troubles, however, did not stop a young, hapless policeman from falling in love with the “wrong” woman, a girl named Gerda from Austrian Tyrol, an inventive and accomplished cook, a single mother with a rich family history of her own, a northerner, the sister of a terrorist, and Eva’s mother.

Vito’s affair with Gerda was a passionate one, but what was the nature of their love? And if he loved her so passionately, why did he return to Calabria? What scars did those years leave on Vito, and on Gerda? It’s time for Eva to find out.

—-

On Monday, October 24, Ms. Melandri will be present at the Italian Cultural Institute of Chicago for a presentation of her book, and will also sign copies from the bookstore. This event is free, but registration through EventBrite is required.

On Tuesday, October 25, she will be at the Women and Children First Bookstore at 7:00 PM. Guests can pre-order a copy of Eva Sleeps for the signing by clicking here.

Come meet a wonderful author and hear about this excellent new book!

Spotlight on: Andrea Molesini

BASTARDS_Cover (1)

ItalBooks is proud to spotlight Not All Bastards are from Vienna, the latest novel from acclaimed author Andrea Molesini.

Winner of the prestigious Campiello Prize, this internationally bestselling debut novel tells the riveting story of an Italian family whose courage is tested when their villa is requisitioned by enemy troops during the First World War. In the autumn of 1917, Refrontolo—a small town north of Venice—is invaded by Austrian soldiers as the Italian army is pushed to the Piave river. The Spada family owns the largest estate in the area, where orphaned seventeen-year-old Paolo lives with his eccentric grandparents, headstrong aunt, and a loyal staff. With the battlefront nearby, the Spada home becomes a bastion of resistance, both clashing and cooperating with the military men imposing on their household. As his family succumbs to acts of jealousy and betrayal, love and hate, Paolo is recruited to help with a compromising covert operation, and his life is put in irrevocable jeopardy. Not all Bastards Are from Vienna is an unforgettable portrait of the erosion of tradition and the fall of an Italian aristocratic family, whose personal battles burn with more fire than those of the war happening around them.

War and Peace meets The Leopard in a novel set among Italian aristocrats during the Great War. . . . A remarkable story. . .  a historical novel that speaks to the present as powerfully and clearly as it does of the past.” —Wall Street Journal

“[Not All Bastards Are from Vienna is] wonderfully alive—often terribly so—as a wartime adventure and story of youth arriving at manhood.”—New York Times Book Review

Andrea Molesini lives in Venice, Italy, where he was born. Not All Bastards Are from Vienna was an international bestseller and it won the prestigious Premio Campiello and Premio Comisso, among other awards. He is a poet; an author of children’s stories that have been translated into French, Dutch and Japanese; and a professor of comparative literature at Padua University.

BookExpo 2016 Spotlight: Cartiere del Garda

Cartiere del Garda, part of the Lecta Group, is specialized in the production of woodfree coated papers for high quality printing: GardaMatt Art, GardaMatt Ultra, GardaGloss Art, GardaCover Hi-Fi and GardaPat 13.

About the company:

The Cartiere del Garda adventure began in distant 1956 in Riva del Garda (TN), when its founders decided to launch an entrepreneurial challenge which would bring lustre and job opportunities to an area which had not at the time experienced its current boom in tourism.

Cartiere del Garda immediately adopted a modern and forward looking approach, and its consistent growth led to its acquisition, in 1971, by Germany’s Bertelsmann publishing group, which had a notably positive effect on its position as a manufacturer of coated paper.

At the end of 1997, Cartiere del Garda left the Bertelsmann multimedia Group and became the focus of the Lecta Group. Through the acquisitions of Condat and Torraspapel, Lecta has developed into an international paper manufacturer ranking second largest in Europe for production of coated woodfree paper.

Available certifications: ISO 14001, EMAS, FSC®, PEFC™, OHSAS 18001 (Safety and Health), ISO 50001 (Energy Management) and ISO 9001 (Quality).

Please Do Judge a Book by its Cover

artelibro-spotlight

Don’t judge a book by its cover, the saying goes, but that’s exactly what “BUONA LA PRIMA!” does. Roughly translating to “The first is good!”, the exhibition will feature 45 of the best Italian book covers published from September 2013-September 2014 “chosen and judged by those who know” and curated by Stefano Salis. As part of the Artelibro Art Book Festival, the exhibit runs from September 12 to October 12 at the Biblioteca d’Arte e di Storia di San Giorgio in Poggiale.

The two best covers will be recognized during a ceremony on September 21 at the Palazzo Re Enzo.

YOU can also be the judge, as this year, the public can cast their vote online for the best cover.

Mondomusica New York was conceived for the US market by CremonaFiere, organizers of Cremona Mondomusica, the principle international trade show dedicated to handcrafted musical instruments. The event began with a breakfast, followed by talks by Antonio Piva, President of CremonaFiere SpA, Massimo Bianchedi, General Manager of CremonaFiere SpA, and Peter Seman, President of the American Federation of Violin and Bow Makers. The presentation concluded with a performance by a trio of musicians from the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, who played pieces by Beethoven, Dohnanyi Serenade and Mascagni with violin, viola and cello.

Italian Cultural Institute presents The Still Life: 18th-century Neapolitan Nativity Scenes and Painting by Gherardo Noce Benigni Olivieri

spotlightimage121479noc3-1

The Italian Cultural Institute, in collaboration with the Loyola University Museum of Art, will present a lecture on The Still Life: 18th-century Neapolitan Nativity Scenes and Painting by Gherardo Noce Benigni Olivieri.

Author Gherardo Noce Benigni Olivieri will present his book, which explores an aspect of art that has previously been neglected by art dealers, historians and critics: the close relationship that has always existed between painting, particularly in Naples in the 17th and 18th centuries, and 18th-century Neapolitan nativity scenes. A series of illustrations will demonstrate the remarkable affinities to be found between the latter – still life tableaus in wax, terracotta, wood and three dimensional, which, in the case of Neapolitan nativity scenes, is usually called finimento – and the still lifes painted by the greatest masters of the genre at the time, in Naples and beyond. Images and, to a lesser extent, words will speak of the profound bonds between artworks in miniature, the hallmarks of Neapolitan nativity scenes, and those on canvas. This book is published by De Luca Editori d’Arte, Rome.

Friday, December 6th at 6:00 PM

Loyola University Museum of Art
Simpson Lecture Hall
820 N Michigan Avenue

A reception will follow.

Reservations required and limited seating.  RSVP: 312-916-7608 or luma@luc.edu.

Please mention that you are a guest of the Italian Cultural Institute to receive the $5 discounted ticket price, which includes the lecture and access to the museum. Museum galleries close at 6 p.m.

An island without books: Frilli to the rescue

spotlightimage11305logo14160logofrilli

While it may seem hard to believe, the island of Lampedusa, the largest and most remote of the Italian Pelagie Islands in the Mediterranean Sea, currently does not have a library or even a bookshop. The Italian publisher Fratelli Frilli Editori (www.frillieditori.com) is not only donating its own publications for a new planned library, it is also accepting book donations at its bookstore in Genova.

The Mayor of Lampedusa Giusi Nicolini has made an impassioned plea for donations for the future Biblioteca Ibby: “Would you live in a city where it’s not possible to buy books? I don’t think so.”

Social media is aiding the cause. There’s even a Twitter hastag #Lampedusalegge (which translates to Lampedusa reads).

ControCorrente: magazines and artists’ books from publishers of visual poetry

spotlightimage122176c

ControCorrente, an exhibit of magazines and artists’ books from publishers of visual poetry, is currently on view at the Fondazione Berardelli in Brescia. Curated by Marco Bazzini and Melania Gazzotti in collaboration with Nicole Zanoletti, the exhibit provides an overview of the publishing houses – many of which are independent and founded and directed by the artists themselves – which in the sixties and seventies published magazines and art books that radicalized the expressive power of words accompanied by the image, creating an artistic movement referred to as visual poetry. The traveling exhibit was previously on display at the Museo della Musica in Bologna during the Artelibro Festival, and will then move to the Centro per l’arte contemporanea Luigi Pecci in Prato.

The Arrow system. Rights management in mass digitization: a European approach

ARROW (Accessible Registries of Rights Information and Orphan Works) is a system – developed by a European consortium coordinated by AIE – to help libraries with the identification of rights status and rights holders in digital library programs. The system is based on a pro-active search of rights holders for works eligible for inclusion in any digitization program, and indirectly is a tool for the identification of orphan works, in circumstances in which other relevant information may not be available.

Listen in as speakers Piero Attanasio, AIE, mEDRA, and Michael Healy, The Book Rights Registry, discuss the Arrow approach and compare the US experience in the same field. This discussion was moderated by Chris Kenneally, Copyright Clearance Center and BeyondTheBook.com., and was part of BEA’s Global Market Forum: Focus on Italy: http://bookexpocast.com/2011/06/13/the-arrow-system/

IBF – INTERNATIONAL BOOK FORUM 2010 Arrivederci, so long, farewell, auf weidersehen, good-bye, ciao

spotlightimage196spotlightimage129260ibf

A record number of participants attended the 2010 IBF – International Book Forum, the business area at the Torino International Book Fair that is dedicated to rights exchange for publishing and audiovisual materials for translation or adaptation. Over 800 people used the service, 120 of whom were invited as part of the collaboration with the Italian Trade Commission (ICE). These professionals came from more than 30 countries (e.g. Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Egypt, Germany, Mexico, Romania, Russia, Sweden, and the USA) and included literary agents, rights managers, producers and publishing scouts for cinema, television and multimedia productions. For the three days of the Forum (May 13-15) they occupied the 200 tables set up in the Lingotto Congress Centre, the hub of the b2b operations at the Torino International Book Fair, taking part in a total of  7500 meetings (1500 more than in 2009).

These three days saw many deals struck: Arlina Dudaj, head of Dudaj Publishing (Albania), bought the publishing rights for the translation of several books, as for example, Bianca come il latte rossa come il sangue by Alessandro D’Avenia from Mondadori, and Che la festa cominci by Niccolò Ammaniti from Kylee Doust agency (Dudaj had already bought the rights to his previous three books at the London and Frankfurt Book Fairs).

Other international players included United Agents and Profile Books from the UK; Buchet-Chastel from France; Maria B. Campbell Associates, Penguin, Three Percent, Harper Collins and Broadway Books (RH Group) from the USA; McArthur & Company from Canada; and Editorial CosacNaify from Brazil. The IBF 2010 featured a special focus on India, the guest country of the Book Fair, with publishing houses Abhinav Publications, Har-Anand Publications, Diamond Pocket Books, PHI Learning, Pitambar Publishing Company, Planet Multimedia Publisher, Pustak Mahal, Shishu Sahitya Samsad, Star Publications, Sterling Publisher, Laxmi Publications, Tushar Publications and  Bollywood video giant UTV, whose first visit to the IBF resulted in the discovery of some very interesting projects that they intend to work on in the future.

On the movie front business was brisk among literary scouts and consultants from major US production houses and talent agencies, including Columbia Pictures / Sony Pictures Entertainment, Fox International, Metro Goldwyn Mayer/United Artists and International Creative Management (the agency that represents stars like Al Pacino, Samuel L. Jackson and Woody Allen). From Britain, we saw Warp Films, among many others; from Sweden Fundament Film; from Germany Integral Film; and from Russia United Film Company. The dynamism of the current Italian cinema scene was amply demonstrated by the participation of Italian production houses: Wildside, a cine-TV production company formed by Lorenzo Mieli, Mario Gianani, Saverio Costanzo, Fausto Brizzi and Marco Martani; Offside, now in production with films “La solitudine dei numeri primi”, based on the novel of the same name which was published by Mondadori, and  “Mia sorella è una foca monaca”, adapted from the book published by Fazi; Fox Italia; Cattleya; Fandango; Minimum Fax Media. Italians were also prominent in the discussion and debate sessions reserved for publishing/film professionals: Italian Publishers in the USA – approach to the US market and potential openings for Italian publishing houses, a presentation by ICE (Italian Trade Commission) and  AIE (Italian Publishers’ Association); Film on the book: Unsolicited advice to publishers from a writer/director, contributed by director Marco Ponti.

The International Book Forum is an initiative of the Torino International Book Fair, and has been  created by Biella Intraprendere, backed by the organizational and financial support of the Italian Trade Commission (ICE), with funding from the Regione Piemonte government and from the Ministry of Economic Development, in the context of agreements established between the Ministry, the Region and ICE.

Secret Siena – Discovering the Hidden Treasures of the Medieval Town

spotlightimage13936siena

A Lecture by Professor Luca Bonomi

Professor Luca Bonomi, President of the Societa` Dante Alighieri in Siena, will describe the most unusual and hidden aspects of his city, Siena. Drawn in by the “visible and evident” beauty of the city and its artistic treasures, visitors often overlook Siena’s less accessible aspects, which make up its grandeur. First Professor Bonomi will discuss the very roots of the city, when during the 13th and 14th centuries, unknown and brilliant designers created a complex network of canals for collecting rain water, which was then used by the residents. The second half of Professor Bonami’s journey will lead us to the analysis of the mosaics that adorn the floor of the Duomo of Siena, created by the most well-known artists of the late 15th century. This pavement can be seen only one month per year in its entirety. The symbols and the surprising selection of characters represented in the mosaics, and their placement along the path from the entrance to the high altar, remain today only incompletely understood. Giorgio Vasari considered this mosaic to be technically unachievable from an artistic point of view because of its incredible beauty.
