The Italian Cultural Institute, in collaboration with the Loyola University Museum of Art, will present a lecture on The Still Life: 18th-century Neapolitan Nativity Scenes and Painting by Gherardo Noce Benigni Olivieri.
Author Gherardo Noce Benigni Olivieri will present his book, which explores an aspect of art that has previously been neglected by art dealers, historians and critics: the close relationship that has always existed between painting, particularly in Naples in the 17th and 18th centuries, and 18th-century Neapolitan nativity scenes. A series of illustrations will demonstrate the remarkable affinities to be found between the latter – still life tableaus in wax, terracotta, wood and three dimensional, which, in the case of Neapolitan nativity scenes, is usually called finimento – and the still lifes painted by the greatest masters of the genre at the time, in Naples and beyond. Images and, to a lesser extent, words will speak of the profound bonds between artworks in miniature, the hallmarks of Neapolitan nativity scenes, and those on canvas.
