While it may seem hard to believe, the island of Lampedusa, the largest and most remote of the Italian Pelagie Islands in the Mediterranean Sea, currently does not have a library or even a bookshop. The Italian publisher Fratelli Frilli Editori (www.frillieditori.com) is not only donating its own publications for a new planned library, it is also accepting book donations at its bookstore in Genova.
The Mayor of Lampedusa Giusi Nicolini has made an impassioned plea for donations for the future Biblioteca Ibby: “Would you live in a city where it’s not possible to buy books? I don’t think so.”
Social media is aiding the cause. There’s even a Twitter hastag #Lampedusalegge (which translates to Lampedusa reads).
