NEL PAESE DI MISTER COLTELLO

by Federica Iacobelli (testo) Leonard (illustratore)

In The Land Of Mister Knife

By Federica Iacobelli (text), Leonard (illustrations)

Stella Stern is a modern Alice that stumbles upon the figure of Mister Knife: David Bowie. Illustrated faces, visionary encounters and multiform dresses will be some ingredients of a trip that will lead Stella, with eyes wide open, into Bowie’s world: an artist and a myth she completely ignored until then.

Thanks to a «quite nonsensical pastime» – to peel off an old wallpaper – and to an odd flowerpot man who will guide her, Stella will start a journey from London to ether, passing through space, America and Berlin; seven chapters of David Robert Jones in his purest form.

Listening to the notes of an ideal playlist, Federica Iacobelli builds an elegant and surreal story, between dream and reality. The narration goes on side by side with the evocative illustrations by Leonard, who shows the popstar in a style that draws on Andy Warhol as well as on fanzine subculture, pop and punk.

Two authors, two different points of view: while Leonard gives snapshots that catch Bowie’s inner world, Iacobelli – in an effective and elegant style – gets into the artist’s life with Stella, a bashful 20-year-old girl with no interest in “myths”.

In The Land Of Mister Knife gives the chance to look at David Bowie in a different way, putting the reader in the shoes of someone who doesn’t know him, or someone who looks at this legendary figure with sceptical detachment. Only one thing is certain: once started, the journey has to be completed.

A book for those who love the art of David Bowie, and for whoever is still waiting to stumble upon him.
