The Price of Petroleum

by Massimo Nicolazzi

Petroleum is a finished good which is technically difficult to handle. It was the XXth century fuel, the architect of changing geopolitics, the cause of wars… However, as time has passed it has always been used more for transportation purposes leaving to gas, another hydrocarbon, the task to see to other needs of ours while petroleum was also becoming famous for the extreme volatility of its price.
Today enthusiasm has turned into worry because of the impact its use can have on climate and on the environment, and also because of the idea that one day there couldn’t be petroleum anymore.
The paradigm of the unlimited development of the productive forces is based on the unlimitedness of the energy sources.
The abundance of petroleum was the ‘fuel’ of our growth. Its shortage might be the ‘fuel’ of our decrease.
