White flowers coffee berries (Fiori bianchi bacche di caffè)

by Pia Parlato and Angelo Ruta

In Africa the headman’s wife of a village gave birth to two girls: one had black skin, UaNyeusi, the other one white skin, UaNyeupe. Their mother came from Italy.

Following the tradition, two coffee plants were planted when the girls were born. Two sisters grew up between coffee plants. When they turned five, the coffee plants bloomed for the first time. The flowers were bone-white just like the skin of UaNyeupe.

Ten years later the mother went back to Italy bringing UaNyeupe with her. UaNyeusi stayed in Africa but she would have liked to stay with her sister.

One day UaNyeupe saw a bar and in a cup of espresso recognized the colour of her sister’s skin.
