by Lance Henson
edited by Mariella Lorusso
In his poems, Henson, a Cheyenne writer and a chief of the Dog Soldiers, recounts the world of this warrior tribe which played a crucial role in resisting colonial expansion and of which Henson himself is a chief. In this vision, “the wolf” is the spirit guide that gave men their cosmic soul. In his poetry Henson fuses the Cheyenne warrior tradition with a wholly contemporary idea of resistance to an individualist and consumerist vision of life. The poet sees this as the only chance for his people’s survival. A bilingual edition, which is also the only existing English version.
Lance Henson (1944) is a Cheyenne poet who writes in English. He has published 23 books of poetry which have been translated into more than 25 languages. His works translated into Italian include Un moto d’improvvisa solitudine (1998) and Traduzioni in un giorno di vento (2001).
