In the summer of 1957, on the occasion of the 6th World Festival of Youth and Students in Moscow and at the beginning of the Khrushchev Thaw, a delegation of Italian intellectuals and enthusiasts for the Soviet world traveled to the Russian capital. Among them was Tommaso Fiore, who wrote an account of the trip entitled In the Land of Utopia (1958). This original work portrays the Soviet world through a series of observations on the politics, landscapes and everyday life of a country that, as tensions in the Cold War eased, was beginning to move towards a more relaxed era. The book offers insights into a leading expert on the Southern Italian question who, from the time of his university studies, had been fascinated by Russia and its history, which in some ways was reminiscent of that of Puglia.
