Italo Calvino and the Publishing house Einaudi

by Domenico Ribatti (editor)

The publishing house Einaudi was founded in Turin in 1933. A young Italo Calvino became a friend and collaborator of Giulio Einaudi and of the other older writers that were already working there, like Cesare Pavese, Felice Balbo, Natalia Ginzburg, Massimo Mila, Franco Venturi and Paolo Serini.

In 1950 Calvino, who was working in the press office, was officially hired at Einaudi. He became a manager in 1955. Over the forty years of his career, he dedicated most of his time to other author’s books, as a tireless reader, editor and promoter.

This book aims to describe this exceptional activity in the publishing house, among the books and for the books. It portrays one of the leading protagonists of 20th century literature, through the experience of the writer and those who worked with him.
