Inspired by the fairy tale of the same name, Rossini’s Cinderella tells the story of Angiolina, whom everyone calls Cinderella. She lives with her father, Don Magnifico, and her two ugly and clumsy stepsisters. Although she is dressed in rags, Cinderella is beautiful and her heart is pure and kind. Alidoro, the king’s counselor, senses this when he visits Don Magnifico’s home. Alidoro is helping the prince search for a bride. He and the prince devise a clever plan to test the true character of Don Magnifico’s daughters. Though Rossini’s opera contains no crystal shoes, fairy godmothers, or mice, it is a delightful and humorous look at human weakness and ambition.
