Matera September 21, 1943

by Pino Oliva

An incredible series of events, carefully reconstructed by Francesco Ambrico, will catapult the reader in the events that bloodied Matera on September 21th 1943.

Taking advantage of the confusion that raged in the days following the announcement of the armistice of 8th of September, the German army could easily implement the disarming plan of Italian military units and fall back to the north.

To complete the plan a systematic work was pursued to damage the roads to slow the advance of the Allied forces from the south. Unfortunately the German soldiers perpetrated many acts of exploitation against the civilian population. All this helped to create a climate of tension that exploded in the dramatic events which this book tells.

On the morning of September 21, Allied forces come near Matera. At 8:00, the immediate and energetic German reaction rejects the first avant-garde Canadian military in their attempt to enter the city from the south. But it is by the afternoon that Matera seems crossed by a wind of madness that triggers the jitters, until then compressed, of the inhabitants and the German garrison.

The incredible and intricate series of events that here are accurately dramatized and drawn by Pino Oliva, have provided, for over seventy years, many questions which only now historians seem to find a partial answer.
