Mount Etna and its Eruptions in Orazio Silvestri works.

by Tiziana Abate Stefano Branca and Carmelo Monaco

The design as a tool for scientific observation

The essays explore the graphical representation of the eruptions and the mineralogical composition of the rocks with “camera lucida” and underlines the contribution to the design made by the radical changes in the system of techniques. Silvestri’s work shows, in fact, that the interest in the graphical representation as explorative tool increases when photography replaces the design as document. The illustrations in the book represent documents of rare beauty where art merges with science to thoroughly describe the history of Mount Etna and its eruptions along the second half of the nineteenth century, the volcano that Unesco has recently added in the world heritage site and defined it as “one of the most emblematic and active in the world.”
