CRISTIAN MANNU is an up-and-coming author from Cagliari, Sardinia. His debut novel, Maria di Isili, was the winner of the Premio Calvino 2015, and was also selected as a finalist for the Premio Opera Prima 2016. He is the father of three children and still lives in Cagliari, where he was born in 1977. He attended the well-known high school “Siotto Pintor,” which famed Sardinian writers Sergio Atzeni, Francesco Abate and Flavio Soriga also attended. Only his dissertation still separates him from a degree in Italian Philology.
A description of Maria di Ísili follows:
In a polyphony of voices, with an intense, mature and metrical language, Cristian Mannu regales us with the story of a woman who, paying the full price for her choice, follows the laws of desire and challenges the social rules of an archaic Sardinia populated by vagrants, midwives-accabadore, bastard children, acts of violence and unspeakable secrets.
