What is the Genius of Catania? To answer this question the historian Antonino Recupero leads the reader by the hand through the history of Catania, the memory of past events, such as earthquakes, eruptions, the sea, and the different civilizations the shaped the town since its foundation, Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Arabs, Normans, Spanish, Bourbons. At the end, the monument of the Elephant, in the oldest part of the town, in front of the Cathedral, seems to be the very symbol of Catania, but it contains so many mysteries not easy to solve. The book is enriched by an original contribution of Alfio Garozzo who carried out an extraordinary apparatus of pictures of the Ionian sea, the town and Mt. Etna.
