“Nobiles Officinae. Pearls, filigrees and silk fillings from the Royal Palace of Palermo” is the title of an important exhibition held in Palermo from December 2003 to March 2004. For the first time, the handiworks of artisans from royal factories in Palermo, produced in the 12th and 13th centuries, were showed to the public; among the most representative items: Costanza’s crown, Henry the Sixth’s funeral clothes and Ruggero the Second’s royal mantle lining.
The book (two volumes) gathers the contributions of the most qualified international specialists in the subject, with a view to showing the activities of the “Nobiles Officiniae” that was a real factory of high importance handicraft. The purchasers of these items (Ruggero, William 1st, William 2nd, Henry 6th, Frederick 2nd) considered them as important as marbles or mosaics that adorned churches and cathedrals.
